Dr. Bosco Govantes is joining the University of Exeter as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy, and Anthropology. An Associate Professor of Political Science at Universidad Pablo de Olavide (Seville), Dr. Govantes has built an international reputation for his work on North African political dynamics, with a particular emphasis on Tunisia.
His research spans comparative politics, Euro‑Mediterranean relations, democratization and democratic backsliding, and the rise of populism. He currently leads the UPO‑funded project “Dissatisfaction, Populism and Authoritarianism in North Africa: Tunisia as a Case Study” and has contributed to four Spanish government‑sponsored research initiatives on regional politics. Dr. Govantes is an active member of several scholarly networks, including the Group for the Study of Arab and Muslim Societies (GRESAM), the Politics, Territory and Participation group, the Political and Electoral Observatory for the Arab and Muslim World (OPEMAM), and the Research Forum on the Arab and Muslim World (FIMAM).
A seasoned educator, he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Comparative Politics, Electoral Systems, Political Behaviour, Quantitative Methods, and other core topics in political science. His international teaching portfolio includes English‑ and French‑language courses at Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Universidad de Sevilla, and Université Lyon II.
Dr. Govantes has also served as a visiting fellow at the Paris Centre for International Studies (CERI‑Sciences Po) and was an electoral observer in the Tunisian elections of 2018 and 2019. During his stay at Exeter, he looks forward to collaborating with colleagues across the Department of Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy, and Anthropology on comparative-authoritarianism research, co‑supervising graduate dissertations, and engaging with the local academic community through seminars and public talks.
